Active Start

Active Start Programming is a program targeted for children between the ages of 2-6 years. Active Start focuses on foundational movement skills that students can build upon in FUNdamentals programming. This Active Start foundation is crucial for children to build the necessary skills to take part in any number of sports later in life. All programs are designed so that the use of already available gymnasium equipment is sufficient

FUNdamentals

FUNdamentals is a program targeted for children between the ages of 6-10 focusing on foundational skill sets of sport and daily activity. This curriculum builds upon the Active Start program and is integral for children with intellectual disabilities to build the necessary skills to take part in any number of sports later in life.

Each week’s lesson plans are outlined within our Manual and can be accessed by contacting the Program’s Department at Special Olympics Ontario. This program is built on the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model

Youth Multi-Sport

Youth Multi Sport (YMS) is a program targeted for young athletes 11-14+ that builds upon the FUNdamentals of sport. YMS combines the fundamental physicality built from Active Start and FUNdamentals into sporting games. Athletes who are particularly interested in the competition aspect of sport can also join Special Olympics sport-specific programs and build a larger community within Special Olympics.

YMS will provide increased motor skills in a competitive environment. Each team will engage in intramural competition. Engraining the active for life philosophy within athletes will encourage an active lifestyle important for a balanced life.
